Description

JX Filtration offers a full range of water intake screens from compact 6” T-type units to large-diameter drum and half-intake configurations, with flexible customization options to suit various flow rates and water source conditions—passive, self-cleaning, and built for long-term submerged operation.

A water intake screen, also known as a passive intake screen, wedge wire intake screen, or intake filter screen, is a T-shaped or cylindrical screening device installed at the submerged end of a water intake pipe. It is mainly used to clean water extracted from the sea, rivers, or lakes—water passes through the screen while debris and aquatic organisms remain in the water source. The cleaned water is used as cooling water for process water or industrial sites, power plants, raw water systems, desalination plants, drainage channels, and irrigation offtakes. Constructed of non-plugging V-shaped wires with continuous and smooth slots, the screen provides a large open area and low flow rate across the surface, with no moving parts and no power required for operation.

Working Principle

  • Passive Filtration Stage: The intake screen is connected to the end of the pump or intake pipe in the water source. All drawn water must pass through the screen before entering the water inlet pipe. Water flows through the wedge wire slots from outside to inside at a low and uniform velocity—typically less than 0.5 f/s (0.135 m/s)—which is below the swimming speed of most aquatic organisms, allowing fish and larvae to avoid being drawn against the screen.
  • V-Shaped Wire Separation: The screen uses V-shaped profile wires spot-welded onto longitudinal support rods. The V-shaped structure provides only two points of contact with particles, and because the space between the wire walls widens as water travels through, particles will not become wedged in place. The outside surface of the screen is smooth and flat, cutting down on abrasion to passing wildlife or other materials.
  • Self-Cleaning Action: The continuous slot design and low approach velocity create a natural self-cleaning effect. Debris and sediment ride along the smooth outer surface of the screen and are carried away by ambient water currents or gravity, eliminating the need for backflushing or manual cleaning. The screen operates continuously without shutting down for routine maintenance.

Advantages

  • No moving parts – Passive screens are reliable and easy to maintain, with no power source or drive motor required for basic operation
  • Clog-resistant V-shaped wire – Trapezoidal profile with narrow top and wide bottom gaps ensures smooth drainage and prevents blockage
  • Large open area – Provides high open area while maintaining the lowest entrance velocity and pressure drop
  • Aquatic life protection – Low slot velocity enables fish and larvae to avoid impingement, protecting the ecosystem
  • Corrosion-resistant construction – Available in stainless steel, duplex stainless steel, and other alloys for freshwater and seawater applications
  • Customizable design – Slot sizes, screen diameters, lengths, and end connections can be tailored to specific intake requirements
  • Low installation and operating cost – Passive operation reduces energy consumption and maintenance expenditure
